A 50-year-old woman suffered minor burn injuries from the blast of an over-heated mosquito fogging machine deployed in Amraiwadi, on Friday morning.
According to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials, the family of Nirmala Patil, a resident of Jagdish Pandit Ni Chali, had registered an online complaint on Thursday, seeking fogging services of the AMC.
Dr Chirag Shah, Deputy Health Officer of the Epidemic Division of AMC, said, “The fogging machine being used was a diesel-based machine and is prone to heating, it is normal. To start the machine, it needs to be pumped during which it is heated. We have been told that our AMC worker had asked Nirmalaben to stand away repeatedly, but I believe she didn’t consider it a threat. The heat from the nozzle resulted in very minor burn injuries.”
Amraiwadi Corporator, Jagdish Rathod of Congress, said, “The event took place at around 8:30 a.m. We called for 108 and she was taken to the LG Hospital. This is complete negligence on the part of AMC where they send in untrained personnel. The machine should have been checked properly. Six months ago, a similar incident had taken place in Amraiwadi itself. We will be meeting the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, GH Solanki, tomorrow, seeking action against the AMC personnel and what can be done to prevent such incidents in the future.”
A written statement from Nirmala submitted to the AMC read, “…During the ongoing fogging process, I was sitting near the door (of her house). I was burnt due to the vapour. I’m fine now. I do not wish to file any complaint against any AMC worker.”
