Hyderabad: Intensifying the fight against mosquitoes and ensuring efficient fogging in the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has adopted the latest and innovative technologies.

On a pilot basis, the civic body has installed smart trackers on vehicle-mounted fogging machines (VMFs) and also portable fogging machines (PFMs) to monitor the movement of these machines.

The GHMC, utilising technology, has installed Internet of Things (IoT) enabled devices to fogging machines which enables in generating complete details of vehicles and their traverse on a Mobile App. This app can be accessed by the staffers of GHMC Entomology wing, Zonal Commissioner and Deputy Commissioners. In addition to these officers, the Mayor, GHMC Commissioner and other Head of the Departments can track the movement of the fogging machines.

A special dashboard is available on the App and the system which generates a weekly report on the areas covered by the vehicle and the quantum of solution/chemical used. The summary report also has the vehicle number, operator name, distance, productivity, and consumption (petrol and diesel) details of the fogging machines. In addition to providing real-time information on batteries and chemical usage, the app gives notification alerts on any sort of tampering, thus preventing any room for malpractices.

Meanwhile, the ‘Live Tracking’ page on the dashboard gets the real-time data of fumigation equipment and the ‘History’ page shows the fumigation done in the selected date range. The speed of the vehicle is also under scrutiny now, said an official.

The technology was incorporated as part of the Urban Malaria Scheme to fight vector-borne diseases. Currently to track the portable fogging machines and vehicle-mounted fogging machines and to monitor their operations IoT-enabled devices have been fixed to 74 machines.

“On a pilot basis, smart trackers were installed on 64 VMFs vehicle-mounted fogging machines and 10 PFMs. The officials can now track their movement using their Mobile App,” said GHMC Chief Entomologist Ram Babu.
